In May of 2023, a two-week Sunday kendama workshop was hosted by SOCO Poverty, See Write Education and Game On Hong Kong in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. The purpose of this event was to provide children in the community with an opportunity to learn about and practice the traditional Japanese toy kendama, while also promoting community engagement and social outreach.
The event was made possible by the involvement of kendama master and volunteers who generously offered their time and expertise to teach the children. The kendama, which is a ball-and-cup toy that requires skill and dexterity to use, has a long history in Japan and has become increasingly popular around the world in recent years.
The event was a great success, with 10 children attending each session and showing a keen interest in learning about kendama. The volunteers who helped to teach the classes were patient and engaging, making sure that every child had the opportunity to practice and improve their skills.
The workshop also provided an opportunity for the children to learn about the importance of giving back to their community. SOCO Poverty and See Write Education, the organizations that hosted the event, are both dedicated to helping those in need and promoting social outreach. By participating in the workshop, the children were able to see firsthand the impact that volunteering and community service can have.
